Mallory's big girl room

With Mallory turning three this summer, I've been thinking about a theme for her big girl room.  I don't plan to move her out of the crib before her birthday, but the actual decorating of the room doesn't necessarily have to coincide with that.  The more I think about it, the more I think it would be best if I got most of it done before the kids are out for the summer.  It may not get me a lot of additional "work" time, but it definitely gives me the freedom to go out and get painting supplies, shop for accessories, etc.

Owls are really popular right now, and was a theme that came to me right away.  When I went to Target the other day and saw their collection, that cinched it for me.  It's cute and inexpensive... what more can you ask for?  What I'm looking for more than anything is inspiration for painting the room.

Here is the rug from their love & nature collection. I'm not keeping the rug, but I took a picture thinking I might paint a similar tree.

Looking around on etsy (seller is wallartdesign), I found this tree. Even better!  I have no intention of buying a vinyl tree, but this is something I can do with paint.  I also have a set of wall decals that includes a few owls, some flowers, a couple birds, etc.  Between the two, I think I can come pretty close to this :)
Of course, I had Bryan moving around some of the furniture in Mallory's room last night.  I need to know where the furniture is going to go to make decisions about where I'm going to paint and what other things I might want to buy!  I would also like Bryan's mom to make a quilt for Mallory's bed. So, the more advance notice, the better!

Brady woke me up at 3:00 a.m. this morning. He was actually calling for Bryan... where has he been that he thinks Daddy will hear him before I do?? lol  He wanted his music to be turned back on, and as much as I hate to be woken up for something so trivial, at least he didn't wake Drew!  So, when I get to this room he says, "I think my tooth fell out." Sure enough, he shows me his smile, and it's gone.  At the time he figured he had swallowed it, but he found it this morning when he got up.  I told him not to expect all his teeth to come out that easily! He was thrilled not only because it is finally out, but also because it came out pain free... AND because the tooth fairy is coming :)

Not sure you can tell, but he's showing
his tooth in the baggie. He wanted to take
it to school. I'm sure you know what my answer was!

Christmas in January

The kids still had some xmas money left to spend, so I took them to Target over the weekend to pick out some legos and their valentines for school.  They wanted Harry Potter sets, so I was relieved that when we got to the store, they had what we were looking for!  Drew got the smaller set - not only does he have less money than Brady, but he mostly just plays with the "guys", so that worked out well.

Mallory got two new books with her money.... well, she didn't go with us, but I picked them out for her :)  One is a Mickey Mouse valentine book, and the other is Dora (of course!)  We have this particular episode of Dora recorded and she has watched it more times than I can count. So, when I handed her the book, she was pretty excited.  She opened it up, and was basically reciting the storyline as she flipped through the pages and looked at the pictures.  I said, "So, do you like it?"  Her reply, "It's awesome!!"  Too funny.

Happy pengies!

I love, love, love the penguins in this kit from Lauren Grier.  I've been eyeing it for months and finally decided I better take some pictures to justify buying it! lol  I used this sketch from Pagemaps to get me started:

I will definitely be making another page to go with this... but not sure of what yet!  It's a little difficult when you live in Texas and there are really no signs of winter - of course, there will be no snow since I would welcome taking a picture of it :)

A look back...

Not at all what I intended to work on!  Maybe I'll at least get another layout started after I have a snack :)  I bought a calendar set from the Shabby Shoppe several months ago and used some of the "toppers" when I made calendars for my mom and Mary for Christmas.  I particularly liked the one for November, so I copied it into a 12x12 layout and added some stuff to the bottom of it.  This is what I started with:

The only reason I was really able to make it work was because I already owned the kit they used to make this particular layout. I guess I should go back through and see if any of the other toppers were made using the kits I have!

Christmas Morning

This is the template for challenge 8 at the Shabby Shoppe.

Here is what I came up with -

I used their digital kit Believe.  And yes, I purposely left Mallory out!  The couple of pics I had of her from Christmas morning were used one of my other xmas layouts - one that is predominantly pink :) Look down a few entries and you will see it!

Mallory a.k.a The Couch Potato

I remember wondering this summer if Mallory would ever be able to go with us to the movies and make it the whole way through.  By the age of 2, both Brady and Drew could go to the movie theater and make it pretty much the whole way through - with snacks, of course.  Mallory, on the other hand, could make it about ten minutes through a t.v. show before getting up and finding something else to do.

Fast forward a couple months and suddenly she has turned into a t.v. junkie.  She will ask to watch a Dora movie, and once I put the movie in, I will not see her again until it's over (which is generally an hour and a half).  Then, when it's over, she will ask for another!  She does like to watch other things, but Dora is definitely her favorite.   I don't know what happened, but it was literally overnight - one day she couldn't be bothered to sit down and watch anything, then the next day she can't be bothered to do anything else! lol

Another few interesting things about Mallory at this age -

* she currently calls me "Mommy Mia" - she heard it on one of our Mario wii games I think (at least that's what Brady told me)

* when I tell her I love her, she says "I'm not taking a nap right now!"

* she knows the names of her classmates and calls them out when they arrive at school. "Courtney! Tracy! Evan!" I find this interesting because I know that even last year (when he was three), Drew didn't know all the names of the kids in his class.

Visit at Grandma's house

Opening a few presents from Aunt Linda :)

Mallory is finally getting comfortable with my mom's dog!

I couldn't get a good shot of both of them...
Aunt Linda was helping Mallory dress Grandma's bears.

"Take a picture of me with this guy." Not sure why, but whatever!

Brady's got a bit of a wild look here. lol
They are showing off their new lego Ninjagos.

Brady's front teeth are just hilarious at this point.  The one that has been loose for quite a while has pushed farther and farther into the tooth next to it and makes for quite the smile.  I think it's only a matter of days before the one is ready to come out, and hopefully the other one won't be far behind.

Friday, January 14, 2011

Huh... how is it already Friday and I haven't posted since Monday?  I know part of the answer is that my picture taking significantly falls off in the month of January. I guess because there isn't much going on out of the ordinary, and also because the camera was out SO much in December.  I was just about to say that it feels like our schedule is back to normal now, but I'm realizing the kids are all off school on Monday - that will confuse me for the rest of the week! lol  Then, next Saturday, Brady has tryouts for baseball. So, it won't be long before we have something else to add to our weekly routine...  Other than that, Mallory is as stubborn as ever, Drew is always tired, and that about sums it up!

Christmas Morning

Brady's holiday party
These two pages were a "quick" set I bought from the Shabby Shoppe -
designed by Nicole Durtschi using the Sugarplum Dreams collection

This is a total scraplift of something I saw in Creating Keepsakes.
Sure, I did a good job with it, but it's certainly not original. LOL

I love the teepees and marshmallows, esp. the open flaps!

Houston Aeros

Santa brought Brady four tickets to the Houston Aeros game this afternoon.  His BFF Zack went to a hockey game when he was in St. Louis house hunting with his parents, and Brady has been asking to go ever since then. It's only a matter of days before they move, so it was a good chance for the boys to spend some quality time together.

Not the best picture ever, but better than nothing! After they left for the game, I was disappointed that I forgot to tell Bryan to take the camera... this is from his cell phone.

Goals for 2011

I prefer not to call them resolutions... not sure why.  Possibly because those tend to go out the window in a few weeks?? lol  Anyway, here they are -

*Drink more water
*Cut back to one coke per day
*Lose five pounds before our trip (I think I'm going to have my jazzercise instructor weigh me in
  once a week since I don't own a scale!)
*Spend more time outside with the kids now before it gets too hot

Those seem manageable, don't they? When I cut back on coke, drinking more water is inevitable since there really isn't anything else in the house I drink. Unfortunately, the worst part is the headache that comes along with less caffeine :(  I'm already planning a run to Chick-fil-A this afternoon for a tea...

Back into the swing of things...

Today was the first day back to school for the kids. It was rough getting up this morning - Mallory has been kind and let us sleep in more than we're used to over the break :) The house is back to usual (with the exception of the tree in Mallory's room) and looks pretty bare as it always does after Christmas!

A few updates on the kiddos -

Brady - Although I wouldn't say he was thrilled to go back to school, he didn't complain either. Of course, he gets up way before school starts anyway, so there was no adjustment for him this morning! Unfortunately, his BFF Zack is moving to St. Louis next week, so they are spending some quality time together in the next few days. We signed Brady up for baseball again, and tryouts are coming up this month. He is still enjoying karate, his new pet Hermie, his bb gun, and his video games :)

Drew - was the most excited about returning to school today... to see his Andrews, of course! Also not surprising was the fact that he fell asleep in the car this afternoon and stayed asleep for quite a while after we got home. He's been having fun playing with Stinky the garbage truck and his new Diego wii game. He also spends a LOT of time watching Brady play his ds... have you seen the tiny screen on that thing? lol But, it makes him happy, so who am I to argue?

Mallory - was NOT pleased to be dropped off at school today. She started telling me yesterday she wasn't going to school. I had to pick her up to get her into the classroom, and then her teacher had to pry her off me (which is a first!). Of course, once I left, she was fine within a few minutes. She loves her new Dora dollhouse (actually, the figures more than the house), and her favorite thing to do is make the different characters sit on the potty. Why she would choose that of all things is beyond me! She was upset with me about putting all the christmas stuff away, esp. her "big Dora book." She has turned into quite the t.v. junkie and is constantly asking to watch Dora (sometimes Mickey Mouse is a suitable alternative).

Hope you're having a good week!

I've spent many, many hours this week researching what I want to do in Australia.  Bryan will be visiting the refineries near Brisbane and Perth, which are on opposite coasts.  He will fly to Brisbane first, and my mom and I are flying into Sydney the following day.  So, we will spend three days there while he is working.  Then, we are all meeting in Cairns.  Staying there will give us the opportunity to see the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest.  After a few days, we are flying back to Sydney and will have a couple more days to sight see before I head home and he heads to the other refinery.

My flights are booked - both to Australia and within Australia.  I think I've decided where we are going to stay in both cities, although I'm waiting for a couple of email responses before I book.  My list of things to do is fairly long, but I'm trying to avoid anything that requires a lot of driving time... esp. since we are already having to fly between Sydney and Cairns.  My cousin actually visited Australia a year or two ago, so I am taking suggestions/advice from her.  A friend of mine also connected me with someone he knows that lives in Australia, so I'm waiting to see what kind of suggestions he offers.

What I've learned so far is that there is a lot to do and no matter how long I'm there, always more to see! What else is new, right?  The other thing is that everything is expensive and the exchange rate right now is a lot worse than it was when I started looking around at Australia this summer.  However, I'm trying to keep in mind that I will most likely never make it back to Australia... my plans right now include going to an opera in Sydney, doing a bike tour of the city, going on a pub crawl (got to get in some things for Bryan!), snorkeling on the reef, white water rafting, and visiting the Blue Mountains.  I was really interested in doing a bridgeclimb of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, until I found out it was $198 per person! Anyone have any work they'd like me to do so I can afford that?? lol
